Not yet a recluse in the hills, let me be one amid the town; better lasting leisure than a passing rest. I have no home—where else should I go? My native land has no lakes and hills so fair.

What would summer be without hydrangeas?

A very fine documentary, which I finished on the journey home from Tokyo. The Kantō Plain holds thirty-six million people; the Japanese archipelago, one hundred and twenty million. Yet seen through the eyes of any one person, the entire world seems to contain that person alone. In despairing isolation and loneliness, unable to reveal the heart, unable to show one’s true face, one finally erupts in silence—or perishes within it. Everyone jokes that I am Japanese. Sadly, seen this way, perhaps I became just like them long ago. I do not want to be “Japanese.”

What is “modern”? What is “progress”? What is “the future”? Of everything I have seen in my life, nothing is more modern, more progressive, or more futuristic than the Tower of the Sun. Even though it is already fifty-six years old. P1: the Tower of the Sun now standing on my desk. P2: the Tower of the Sun at Expo ’70 Osaka. P3: exactly one year ago today, 14 April 2025, when I travelled to Osaka expressly to see it with my own eyes and took this photograph at its feet.

With little else to do over the holiday, I wrote a small tale in the manner of a classical Japanese monogatari. Long, long ago, in April of some distant year, a traveller from the Tang lands journeyed along the San’yōdō. When his travels brought him to Maiko-no-hama, from his ox carriage he saw a maiden standing upon the shore. She wore a robe of sky blue, and in her left hand held aloft a gleaming bronze mirror. Facing the sunlight, she smiled at the traveller from the Tang lands. Such was the maiden’s beauty that even Princess Kaguya of the Moon, upon seeing her, would surely have hidden her face behind a cypress fan in shame. What hope, then, had an ordinary mortal man? The traveller was just leaning his head beyond the ox carriage, hoping for one more glimpse of her matchless face, when the maiden vanished without a trace. For the rest of the journey, he dared not draw his head back into the carriage for even a moment, lest he miss the maiden’s reappearance. Yet all the way to Himeji, he never saw her again. He learned only that her name was Akashinotohime (Princess of the Akashi Strait). After sailing home to the Tang lands, the traveller spent his days staring out to sea. How many times the sun rose and set beyond the horizon; how many times the tides advanced and withdrew along the shore. Still he could not forget the face of Akashinotohime, and even the sea before him seemed drained of colour. The traveller sent many envoys across the water to Akitsushima to seek news of Akashinotohime. But he had remembered the hand that held her bronze mirror as the right, not the left, and one envoy after another departed without reply. So he waited until the seventh month. Then the traveller resolved to sail to Akitsushima himself. He went nowhere else, but ordered his boat to put in directly at Maiko-no-hama. It was a day heavy with cloud. Upon the shore, the traveller saw Akashinotohime once more. She wore a robe of grey-blue. The bronze mirror remained in her left hand, but no longer shone. There was no smile upon her face. She looked no different from any ordinary woman he had known in the Tang lands. The traveller returned home. Yet he could never forget the Akashinotohime he had seen at Maiko-no-hama: the maiden who held aloft a glittering bronze mirror, whose beauty would have made even Princess Kaguya hide her face in shame— Akashinotohime. He searched every shore beneath heaven, the coasts of the Tang lands and the coasts of Akitsushima alike, but never again did he behold such a face.

Today—though at this hour I suppose it was yesterday—the whole family gathered for a New Year dinner at a restaurant, and I drank about 150 millilitres of baijiu. Then they coaxed me onto the stage to sing Masao Sen’s “Kitaguni no Haru.” I was, in every sense, barely alive. Ah— never mind how peculiar it felt to perform before a roomful of relatives I scarcely knew. The moment I picked up the microphone, I pictured Masao Sen singing the song in a rumpled trench coat, a furoshiki bundle over his shoulder: a man from the northern country who had gone to Tokyo to make his way. And I could not help thinking of myself out in the wider world. My clothes may be a little smarter, but am I not just such a person too?

绫波丽这人造人本没有情感,却回头注视递来水一般柔和的微笑;

Late at night, staring absently at the two faces on my desk, I suddenly noticed a coincidence that may not be mere coincidence. It turns out that whenever I choose a figure, I have only ever looked at the eyes. Rei Ayanami, an artificial being supposedly without emotion, turns back to meet a glass of water with a smile as gentle as water itself. Guanyin, a bodhisattva beyond human feeling, lowers her gaze in compassion, pure and aloof as the moon. The first scroll of the Xuanhe Catalogue of Paintings opens with an account of Gu Kaizhi: whenever he completed a portrait, he might leave the pupils undotted for years. Asked why, he replied, “The beauty or plainness of the limbs has no bearing on the subtle essence. To transmit the spirit in a likeness—it is all there, in the eyes.” Song sculptors gave Guanyin the breath of a living person entirely through those eyes: eyes like the moon seen in water.

Persian art has always enchanted me with its poetry. For this inscription alone, it became the only object in the entire exhibition with which I wanted a photograph. A rose without scent or hue is a strange thing indeed; no nightingale would ever fall for it. O learned man— it is the soul of this flower that I adore, not the charms of colour and form.

CRH5A和谐号——老家刚通了高铁,虽然说怎么跑的还是这快20年前的车型;

NY6内燃机车牵引的普速列车——虽然说NY6这个车型很冷门(这也是我为什么买这台机车的原因,没人买,不用抢),但它是八九十年代京包铁路北京山区段的主力牵引机车,说不定父母辈之前坐火车出远门或者回老家的时候坐的就是这一列;

The last time I needed a change of mood, I rearranged my desk. There is less on it than before—especially the model trains. An entire tabletop once stood crowded with them; now only two remain. A CRH5A Hexie EMU: high-speed rail has only just reached my hometown, though somehow it still runs with a model nearly twenty years old. An ordinary passenger train hauled by an NY6 diesel locomotive: the NY6 is an obscure model—which is precisely why I bought it; nobody else wanted one, so there was no scramble. Yet through the 1980s and ’90s it was the principal locomotive on the mountain section of the Beijing–Baotou Railway. Perhaps this was the very kind of train my parents’ generation once took when travelling far from home, or returning to it. Keeping these two trains may still have something to do with where I come from.

It has been so long since I last saw my breath turn white in the cold.

I have felt an unusually strong urge to express myself lately. Language, after all, marks the limits of thought. It has taken me an entire year to understand one thing. I was always afraid that I could not hold on to beautiful things, always afraid they would leave me. I obsessed over what changes and what remains: the world around me that I could never quite grasp, a life that refused to settle, the loneliness that never changed. I feared the mutability of things, and the absence of anything dependable. A sunset is beautiful. Watching its reflection beside the lake, one wonders what in the world could be lovelier. The sun will set—not because it has abandoned me, but because the Earth is turning. I cannot seize the beauty of a sunset or carry it away. No words, no camera, however well they capture light and shadow, can preserve the whole of the feeling. There is only the present: to feel beauty with my whole being, and happiness with my whole being. I came to understand that beauty and happiness are not things to be taken away or left behind, nor must we insist that they endure. Rejoice when they arrive; do not grieve merely because they pass. As long as I exist and remain capable of feeling, I need not fear the endless changes in the people and things around me. It is like the beauty of the sunset: when it appears, I give myself to it; when the sun has gone down, I know that as long as I can return to this lakeside, such splendour will appear again. It took me a year—perhaps all twenty-three years of my life—to realise that fearing change and clinging to permanence are both unnecessary. I had thought 2025 the worst year of my life. I spent it immersed in fear and sorrow over change, yet this understanding became the most precious gift the year gave me. “Only the clear breeze over the river and the bright moon among the mountains: heard by the ear, they become sound; met by the eye, they take on form. None can forbid us from taking them, and their enjoyment can never be exhausted. They are the Creator’s boundless treasury.” Like Su Shi and his companions drifting upon the Red Cliff river nine hundred and forty-three years ago, “we lay down together in the boat, unaware that the east was already growing light.”
